Outdoor hobbies outside your door

18 May 2012

Anybody with a serious outdoor hobby has the dream of living right next to it.

Eliminate the hassle of loading up all the gear, and driving and parking and unloading and reloading, and you have a hobby with a lot less hassle. Which means you will do it more often. Which means you will get better at it.

Plus there is the immeasurable factor of looking more local and cool if you ride up on your bike instead of having to wrestle it off of one of those ridiculous roof racks.

If you take away snow skiing – the biggest car-hassle sport of them all – just about every other vigorous athletic pursuit is done here in the Bay Area, and there are people living with it at their...

Do Corporate Sponsors at MOCA Have Censorship Authority?

18 May 2012

When artist Chris Silva got an invite to participate in an art show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), he wanted to make sure he brought his best work. The Transmission LA show carried the outsider street credibility of its curator, Beastie Boy Mike D, and being censored for his efforts was the furthest thing on Silvas mind.

But while the traditional art world is populated with thin-skinned control freaks bent on manufacturing self-serving historical narratives, Transmission LA couldnt be bothered with stuffy old conventions like freedom of expression. The breath of fresh air that convergence culture is supposed to bring to the stuffy hallowed halls of fine art reportedly...

Can an app help you sleep better?

18 May 2012

You toss and turn in bed. You drift off, only to jolt awake from a stressful nightmare.

The importance of getting a good nights sleep is well known, but sweet dreams arent always easy to come by.

The age-old quest for a better nights shut-eye has generated countless gadgets (from simple sleep masks to white-noise machines, and specialty pillows that emit relaxing sounds and scents) and given rise to popular folk superstitions (like dreams portend the future). Now dream-manipulation technologies are hitting the market: apps that claim to give you control over your dreams; glow-in-the-dark masks that train your mind to relax. But what works, and what doesnt?

Home Trends: Create the ultimate storage and hobby garage

17 May 2012

What kind of toys do you have stored in your garage? All of our many Summit County hobbies bring skis, snowboards, bikes, kayaks, canoes, tools, snowshoes and plenty of other equipment. Even if you are lucky to have a garage, you may be struggling with how to organize all of this gear. However, with todays brilliantly designed garage and storage organization, you can create that perfectly organized and functional garage that still offers space to spare.

Typically in other areas outside of Summit County, the biggest use for garages is for parking vehicles. However, in the highlands we have more stuff to store, and ironically, we have less space to store it. As mentioned, we have far more...

No relaxing yet for the victims of a string of break-ins in Ocoee FL

17 May 2012

For the residents of Ocoee, FL, it is not time to relax yet! Ocoee has been dealing with a string of break-ins since late February, early March of this year, including a friend and neighbor of this reporter!

Several homes have been broken into since the early part of the year. Among the items stolen have ranged from flat-screen televisions, computers and other electonics, to cash, credit cards, jewelry and watches. Most of these break-ins have occured between noon and 3pm and have been a complete surprise to the homeowners upon their return home. The most common entry has been through side/back windows or back doors, and the loot seems to be disappearing over the fences in the back...
